Salesian College Sunbury’s Corriedale Stud first began in 2015 and now consists of a flock of over 80 head. The commencing of a Corriedale stud at Salesian College was purely for the learning and experiences that could be provided for students.
As a Dual-Purpose breed, the Corriedale’s have allowed a vast variety of students to learn about both aspects of the sheep industry, Fleece and Carcass. Our first suppliers of our Ram and Ewes consisted of Toolleen, Gambier View and Ballarat Grammar.
Our first lamb drop was in 2016 with the sire supplied from Quamby
Plains, giving us our very first stud Corriedale lambs to show
throughout the year. 2017 lambs were sired by a Rupertswood bred ram by a
Gambier View sire and dam. The last two years, we have used a Quamby
Plains ram who we believe to have bred us a strong, Corriedale show team
for 2019.
Our College Poll Dorset stud have been operating since June 2017, making this year the third year running.
Blauvelt Poll Dorset stud supplied our first Poll Dorset Ram and Ewes kicking off the stud and allowed us to have our first Poll Dorset Prodigies born on site at Salesian College Sunbury. Our Stud’s showing debut was in 2018 at the Australasian Poll Dorset Championships where two of our Ram Lambs and one of our Ewe Lambs managed to bring us home Best Strike Rate at the competition.
Since then, our Poll Dorset Stud has also exhibited at the 2018 Sunbury Show being awarded Grand Champion Ram and Ewe as well as attending the annual Rupertswood Harvest. This year, our poll Dorset’s have exhibited at Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair as well as the Victorian Sheep and Wool Show in Ballarat. We were extremely happy with our results from last year as well as our commencement of this year and hope to achieve more in the years to come.
