Awards, Awards, Awards!

University of New South Wales Maths and English Competitions

This term has seen some starring achievements by Year 9 Students. Beginning with the University of New South Wales Maths and English competitions. In the Maths competition all students achieved at levels greater than the national average. With an outstanding performance by Isaac Alterton achieving a Distinction, positioning himself in the top 2 percent of all students who competed in the challenge and thus achieving the Principal’s award as the highest achiever of all students from Salesian College. The English competition was as successful, again with all students achieving levels greater than the national average, Josh Emonson ranked the highest being awarded a Credit for his efforts.

First XI Cattle Scholarship
The first Agricultural Show for the First XI Cattle team was the Grand Annual Sunbury Show on Saturday October 8th. The College was well represented and took all the cattle awards for the event. More importantly it was the first opportunity for the students to compete in Handling Competitions, Kate McIntosh won the U15, while Olivia Jury won the Juniors with Casey Ryan coming in second. This will see all three qualify for the Royal Melbourne Show State Handlers competition in 2017.

The students have just this past weekend attended and competed at the 2016 Royal Geelong Show Cattle and Handling Competitions. Each of the students spent many hours preparing the cattle for showing often arriving at the showgrounds at 6am and not leaving until well after 8pm. The students presented the First XI cattle and cattle from studs including Savannah Simmentals, Limosins and Brahman cattle for competition. The College was well represented in the awards with our cattle taking out Reserve Champion Female with Apple and Reserve Senior Champion Female with Eloise.

The following is an excerpt from the Simmental Victoria’s Facebook Page, Simmental exhibitors excelled at the 2016 Royal Geelong Show - with sunshine, rain and wind the Simmentals enjoyed great success at this year’s show. Mavstar Simmentals taking out the Junior Champion Interbreed Bull- what a great result! Along with other members enjoying champion and reserve champion success in the Simmental ring. Congratulations to VPC Cattle Services taking out the Grand Champion Simmental Exhibit. This year the success of the Salesian College Sunbury students with their very own Simmental exhibits – Farm and Agricultural teacher Matt Fitzgerald said “he enjoyed the show and also is proud of the students and their success with the Simmental breed”. The students now look forward to the Ballarat Show in two weeks to fine tune their handling skills and show off their cattle once again.
