Fish Creek Farm / Salesian College “Rupertswood” Speckle Park Cattle Scholarship

The recent school holidays was a very busy time for our three scholarship recipients, Jazmine Anderson, Bianca Need and Matthew Barkman. The students attended and competed at the 2015 Royal Melbourne Show Cattle and Handling Competitions. Each of the students spent many hours preparing the cattle for showing, often arriving at the showgrounds at 6am and not leaving until 8pm. With the assistance of Alana Jury and Trent Oats the students presented the cattle for competition on two separate occasions, along with Matthew and his heifer Georgia invited to participate in the Grand Parade. The College was well represented in the awards with Matthew & Georgia taking out Third place and Bianca & Pia Fifth place in the Cattle Showing competition. All three members of the team were finalists in the Junior Handling competition.

The students wrote the following reflections in regards to their experiences of the Royal Melbourne Show:

We attended the 2015 Royal Melbourne Show, during the September holidays. From the 26th till the 29th, arriving between 5.30-6.00am every morning, preparing our cattle for the long day ahead, washing and drying the heifers.  We also had to clean their beds and make their feed for the morning. During the day we were to make sure that their beds were clean and that the heifers had hay and water. The cattle judging show took place on the 27th, 'Georgia', Matt Barkman's heifer came 3rd and 'Pia', Bianca Need's heifer came 5th, whilst 'Cyndy' my heifer came 7th. We had a class of 14 heifers ranging from 14-20 months old, our’s being the youngest in the class. On the Tuesday 29th the handlers judging competition occurred with our class being split into two heats. Matt Barkman got through to the finals for his class ageing between 12-15 years old. Bianca and I were in the next class of 15-18 year olds, with myself getting through to finals. Unfortunately Matt and I only missed out on ribbons by a few positions.  We had some amazing helpers throughout our time at the Melbourne show and we'd really like to thank them for all the help and support: those helpers where Alana Jury, Trent Oats, Vaughan Campagnola and Keith Dowsett.

Over all the Melbourne show was a great and terrific experience for us three students. It was definitely an eye opening opportunity, which showed us what showing cattle is really all about. The atmosphere throughout the cattle show was incredible and the support everyone gave was truly amazing. Special thanks to Jason Keays owner of Fish Creek Farm Speckle Park Stud, for all the effort and time he has put in to the scholarship - it has been incredibly great.

Whilst being a wonderful opportunity, the students themselves have represented the College with great capacity and endeavour. Each student has given so much to the welfare and care of the cattle, devoting many hours of their own time to the challenge. The College is extremely proud of the students and wish them the very best for their next competition at the Royal Geelong Show. These efforts could not have been achieved without the advice and assistance of Mr Matthew Fitzgerald, Mr Keith Dowestt and Mr Jason Keays, who given up their personal time to work with the students.
