As a teaching staff, we have spent a lot of time thinking about the skills and habits we want our Salesian graduates to demonstrate. We believe that these attributes are essential to success in life both at school and beyond. They go beyond the subject-specific skills that often get much of the attention in assessments and community discussions about whether schools are meeting the needs of our young people. Yet without them, our students will struggle to experience successful and fulfilling relationships and careers. Furthermore, in a rapidly changing workplace, the demand from employers for interpersonal, creative and critical thinking skills is growing at a much faster rate than other types of skills.
At Salesian College Sunbury, we have defined these skills and habits in four key areas:
All students are regularly assessed on these skills and habits, across their subject areas. We encourage you to look for these on your child’s assessment feedback, to discuss your child’s progress in these areas, and to make them a focus in discussions with your child’s teachers.
The Oratory Program at Salesian College Sunbury recognises the need to challenge those high achieving students who will benefit from extension in their academic program. Students in the program study their core subjects (Religious Education, English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science and Health and Physical Education) together, with an emphasis on going ‘deeper’ into the concepts and skills in these subjects. It is an excellent opportunity for like-minded students to learn with and from each other in an academically challenging environment.
We are currently interviewing students and their families who have been invited to join the Year 7 Oratory class of 2020, as well as some students to join the Year 8 class next year. Invitations are based on consistent academic performance, a demonstrated willingness to seek extension and teacher recommendations (either primary school teachers or Year 7 teachers).
